Mail merge email limit per day in Google Sheets
You have a list of 400 people in a sheet. Can you email them all today? With Fillmore, the answer depends on a Google limit.
This guide explains the daily limits, what counts, and how to plan a big send. It ends with a small calculator.
Which limit applies to Fillmore
Fillmore sends with Apps Script's MailApp. So these limits apply to it and to your own scripts. Google sets them for each account. Fillmore cannot raise them.
The daily limits
These are Google's Apps Script limits, for each person:
| What | Free Gmail account | Google Workspace account |
|---|---|---|
| Email addresses a day | 100 | 1,500 |
| New Google Docs a day | 250 | 1,500 |
| New Google Slides a day | 250 | 1,500 |

Google says the limits reset 24 hours after your first request. So the day starts when you start sending, not at midnight.
What counts against the limit
Google counts email addresses, not emails. Some examples:
- One email to one address counts as 1.
- One email to 3 addresses counts as 3.
- A test email to yourself counts as 1 too.
In Fillmore, one cell can hold several addresses, split by commas or semicolons. Each address counts once.
Each row also makes one new file. Docs and Slides each have their own count. So a merge with email meets 2 limits. The lower one decides.
How Fillmore keeps to the limits
Fillmore shows how many files and emails are left today. You see it before you press Make files. It also shows how many the run needs.
Fillmore reads the email count from Google itself. For files, it counts what it made in the 24 hours since its first file.
If the run needs more than is left, it makes what fits today. The other rows show Failed, with the reason. After the limit resets, press Retry failed rows. For form answers, press Make files.
Fillmore starts with the free account limits, to be safe. It moves to the Workspace limits once Google shows more than 100 emails left.
How long will your list take?
Pick your account, and type how many rows you have.
How many days will my run take?
This result is for a free account with 340 rows. Turn on JavaScript to try your own.
The answer is for a fresh day. Email sent today by your own scripts with MailApp uses the same count.
How to send a big list safely
- Send in batches. Run the first part today, and the rest after the reset.
- Test with one row first. Add a row with your own address at the top.
- Check the addresses first. Fillmore stops before it starts if a row has a bad address. It names the row.
- Keep the email short and plain. It looks less like spam.
- For more than 1,500 a day, use a service made for bulk email.
The email guide shows how to set up the email itself. Want to email only people you have not emailed yet? Read how to merge only new rows.
Common questions
Does the limit count emails or people?
People. Each address an email goes to counts once. One email to 3 addresses uses 3.
Can Fillmore send more if I pay?
No. Fillmore sends with Apps Script's MailApp, so Google's MailApp limit applies. A price plan cannot change it.
Do the limits reset at midnight?
No. Google resets them 24 hours after your first request. So plan a big send across 2 days.
Does a failed email still count?
It may. Google decides what counts. If an email fails, Fillmore removes that row's file. The next run makes the file and sends the email again.
